Andre Kertesz - The Polaroids at Silverstein
Last Thursday I went to the opening at Silverstein Gallery for Andre Kertesz. My teacher from when I was a student at Pratt, Doug Schwab, invited me to the opening and I am thankful that he did because I would not have wanted to miss this show. The images were made with an SX-70, all in his apartment in NYC, after his wife Elizabeth died. Using only the objects in his apartment, they are imbued with emotion and humor, and the colors have a dreamlike, painterly quality that draws you into his world. He had an uncanny way of creating witty combinations with everyday objects. The images with glass figurines interacting with one another or standing alone, are possibly my favorites, but I think I am in love with all of them.
Andre Kertesz - May 24, 1979
A collection of all his polaroids can be seen in a new book recently released: Andre Kertesz: The Polaroids. Doug Schwab worked with Robert Gurbo, Curator for the Estate of Andre Kertesz, as the Digital Prepress Editor for the book and has done an incredible job of reproducing the original beauty and magic of these images. The show in on view at Silverstein until November 24th.
